Dr. Helen McCarthy FRCP PhD FRCPath is a Consultant Haematologist at University Hospitals Dorset, where she leads a team of scientific and clinical researchers dedicated to improving survival rates and the quality of life for patients with blood cancers. She is also a member of the WMUK Medical Advisory Board.
Education and Training
Dr. McCarthy trained at the University of London (St George’s Hospital medical school), completed a PhD at Southampton University working on developing DNA idiotypic vaccination against B-cell malignancies and immunogenetic analysis of these tumours. She worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the MD Anderson cancer centre, Houston, USA.
Clinical Practice and Specialisation
Dr. McCarthy specialises in the treatment of chronic lymphoid malignancies, including Waldenström macroglobulinaemia, multiple myeloma, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and runs dedicated clinics for each of these conditions. She has been instrumental in numerous clinical trials, focusing on innovative treatments and therapies, and has significantly contributed to the field of haematology.
Research and Contributions
Her research interests include immunogenetic analysis of B-cell malignancies and clinical trials to treat chronic lymphoid malignancies including Waldenström macroglobulinaemia. Dr McCarthy contributed to 41 publications, including guidelines on the diagnosis and management of Waldenström macroglobulinaemia, and has received over 1,000 citations. Her work on drugs such as Ibrutinib and Zanubrutinib has been pivotal in advancing treatment options for patients.
