We’re asking our community to urge their MPs to support the Cancer (Reporting and Strategy) Bill, which would help ensure the Government is held accountable for delivering its commitments in the National Cancer Plan for England.
WMUK has joined 63 other cancer charities as a signatory to a joint One Cancer Voice letter to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, the Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP, calling on the Government to support Clive Jones MP’s Cancer (Reporting and Strategy) Bill.
The Bill would require the Government to report to Parliament each year on the progress it is making towards delivering the commitments set out in the National Cancer Plan for England.
Why does this matter?
A national cancer plan is an important opportunity to improve outcomes and experiences for people affected by cancer. But making commitments is only the first step: progress must be monitored, and the Government must be held accountable for delivering on its promises.
Annual reporting to Parliament would help maintain scrutiny of the National Cancer Plan, drive progress against its commitments and keep cancer high on the political agenda.
For people affected by WM and LPL, it is important that commitments to improving cancer care translate into meaningful improvements in diagnosis, treatment, information and support. We believe that transparent reporting and accountability have an important role to play in making this happen.
You can read the joint One Cancer Voice letter to the Secretary of State to find out more about the charities’ call for Government support.
Will you ask your MP to support the Bill?
We’re encouraging everyone in the WMUK community to contact their MP and ask them to support the Cancer (Reporting and Strategy) Bill.
You can help by downloading our letter template, adding your details and sending it to your MP. It only takes a few minutes, and your message can help demonstrate the strength of support for accountability on cancer commitments.
Together, we can help ensure that commitments to improving cancer care are backed by action, scrutiny and accountability.
